Q&A

Qualities required to be a good Good Quantity Surveyor: To be commercially astute and contractually aware. To have a good head for numbers. To understand the technical aspects of construction and how the constituent parts go together. I spent a lot of time on sites as a younger person and this experience was invaluable. I believe that Quantity Surveying should be taught like an apprenticeship. Trainee Quality Surveyors/Cost Managers’s should have to spend a certain amount of time on sites to learn how buildings go together. I see a lot of people who have been in the industry for a lot longer than I have who are very poor technically.

Advice like above would be, get out to site as often as possible, be a sponge, listen to and learn from your colleagues. Learned experience trumps the textbook every time. Ask lots of questions, there are no silly ones. Be adaptable, every project is different.
